Why Choose Fethiye for Your Turkey Holiday?
Fethiye is one of Turkey's most compelling travel destinations — a sun-drenched coastal city on the turquoise Aegean coast where ancient Lycian civilisation meets world-class Mediterranean beaches. Unlike the over-commercialised resorts of Antalya or Bodrum, Fethiye retains an authentic Turkish character: lively bazaars, fresh fish markets, and local tea gardens line streets that lead to 2,400-year-old rock tombs carved directly into the limestone cliffs above the town.
The region is home to some of Turkey's most iconic natural wonders — Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon (consistently ranked among the world's top beaches), Butterfly Valley (a pristine canyon accessible only by boat), Saklikent Gorge (Europe's longest gorge) and the ghost town of Kayaköy. It's a destination that genuinely rewards exploration: one morning you're paragliding above the Blue Lagoon, the next you're sailing the Turquoise Coast on a traditional gulet, and the evening ends over fresh seafood at the marina.
For families, couples and solo travellers alike, Fethiye offers a rare combination: luxury resort experiences at competitive prices, rich history, dramatic natural scenery, excellent food and warm Turkish hospitality — all in a single destination.

🏆 XO Cape Arnna — Ultra-Luxury All-Inclusive
XO Cape Arnna is arguably Fethiye's most prestigious all-inclusive resort, perched dramatically on the coastline with sweeping views of the Aegean. What makes it exceptional is its thoughtful room categorisation — from 48m² Deluxe Rooms to 160m² Terrace Family Suites with sea-front terraces. Child policy is one of the most family-friendly on the coast: infants (0–1 years) stay completely free. The resort's multiple pools, world-class spa, fine dining restaurants and direct beach access justify its premium positioning. Available June to September.
🏖️ Jiva Beach Resort — Intimate 5-Star Beachfront
Jiva Beach Resort is celebrated for its boutique scale within a 5-star framework — you get personalised service without the impersonality of a mega-resort. Rooms range from Attic categories (pool and land views) to Swim-Up Rooms with private pool access and Family Suites priced per unit (ideal for large families). Its long season (May through November) and consistent quality across occupancy types make it a favourite for repeat visitors to the Turkish Riviera.
🦋 Club & Hotel Letoonia — Legendary Resort Village

Its unique Connect Bungalow format (two connecting rooms with shared facilities) is perfect for extended families travelling together.

Things to Do in Fethiye — Top Activities & Attractions
Paragliding over Ölüdeniz
Tandem paragliding from Babadağ Mountain (1,960m) above the Blue Lagoon is Fethiye's most iconic experience. The 45-minute flight offers views of the Turquoise Coast that no photograph truly captures. Multiple licensed operators depart daily — book in advance in peak season.
12-Island Boat Tour
Fethiye's famous 12-Island boat tour visits secluded coves, ancient ruins submerged in turquoise water, and swimming spots surrounded by pine-covered hills. Departs daily from the marina with lunch included. One of Turkey's best-value full-day excursions.
Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is arguably Turkey's most photographed beach — an impossibly turquoise natural lagoon sheltered from ocean waves, perfect for swimming with children. The adjacent Belcekız Beach offers sun loungers, water sports and beachside restaurants.
Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi)
Only accessible by boat or a steep hiking trail, Butterfly Valley is a pristine canyon wilderness named for the hundreds of Jersey Tiger butterfly species that inhabit it. Stay overnight in one of the valley's basic camps for a truly off-grid Turkish experience.
Saklıkent Gorge
Europe's second-longest gorge cuts 18km into the Taurus Mountains just 45km from Fethiye. Wade through icy snowmelt streams, explore cave chambers and dine at riverside restaurants. A classic Turkish adventure that surprises every visitor with its raw drama.
Lycian Rock Tombs
The most iconic image of Fethiye town itself — giant Lycian tombs carved directly into the limestone cliff face above the city centre around 400 BC. The largest, Tomb of Amyntas, can be climbed for views over the marina. Entrance is inexpensive and the site is illuminated beautifully at night.
Kayaköy Ghost Village
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most haunting places in Turkey — an entire Greek village abandoned in 1923 during the population exchange. 3,000 stone houses, two churches and a school stand empty on a hillside above Fethiye, slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Blue Cave & Gemiler Island
Take a boat to Gemiler Island — also known as St Nicholas Island — where Byzantine church ruins, mosaics and swimming coves create an extraordinary day out. The Blue Cave nearby glows with luminescent water that must be seen to be believed.
Fethiye Bazaar & Tuesday Market
Fethiye's Tuesday Market is one of the largest and most authentic weekly markets on the Turkish coast — fresh produce, handmade Turkish carpets, spices, olives, cheese and leather goods spread across multiple streets. Arrive early for the best selection.
Scuba Diving & Snorkelling
The waters around Fethiye are exceptionally clear and rich with marine life. Several dive sites include underwater ancient ruins, caverns and wall dives. Beginners can try introductory dives with certified operators while experienced divers can explore caves at depth.
Famous Foods & Restaurants in Fethiye
Fethiye's food culture is a highlight of any visit — anchored by the freshest seafood from the daily morning fish market, supplemented by the rich traditions of Aegean and Mediterranean Turkish cuisine. Whether you're eating at a white-tablecloth marina restaurant or grabbing a börek from a street bakery, the quality is consistently excellent.
Çoban Kavurma
A slow-cooked lamb dish with tomatoes, peppers and herbs — a Fethiye staple found in traditional meyhanes (taverns). Rich, earthy and deeply satisfying after a day of hiking.
Fresh Grilled Sea Bass (Levrek)
The daily fish market sets the standard — sea bass, sea bream, red mullet and bluefish caught that morning, grilled simply with lemon and olive oil. Order at the market, they cook it on-site.
Gözleme
Thin savoury Turkish pancakes filled with spinach and cheese, minced meat or potato — cooked fresh by local women at the bazaar. Fethiye's version is particularly good, thinner and crispier than the tourist norm.
Mantı (Turkish Dumplings)
Tiny handmade dumplings topped with garlic yogurt and paprika butter — a dish that demands patience to make and seconds to eat. Several old-town restaurants specialise in this Anatolian comfort food.
Börek
Flaky filo pastry filled with white cheese, spinach or mince — freshly baked in wood-fired ovens every morning. A börek and a Turkish tea from a Fethiye bakery is the perfect breakfast before exploring the bazaar.
Simit & Turkish Breakfast
Fethiye's marina promenade cafes serve elaborate Turkish breakfasts — an array of cheeses, olives, honey, jams, eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers and freshly baked bread. A leisurely tradition worth dedicating an entire morning to.
Seafood Meze Platter
Fethiye marina restaurants excel at cold meze — stuffed mussels, grilled calamari, octopus salad, tarama (fish roe dip) and marinated anchovies — traditionally accompanied by rakı, Turkey's anise-flavoured spirit.
Künefe
A hot dessert of shredded pastry filled with unsalted cheese, soaked in syrup and topped with crushed pistachios — served in specialist dessert shops, best eaten immediately from the pan. One of Turkey's most addictive sweets.
Fırın Sütlaç (Rice Pudding)
Oven-baked rice pudding with a caramelised top — sold at every pastane (pastry shop) in Fethiye. Simple, creamy and light enough to enjoy even in summer heat.
🍽️ Best Restaurants & Dining Areas in Fethiye
The Marina (Yat Limanı): Fethiye's most scenic dining strip — restaurants here have terrace seating overlooking hundreds of gulets. Great for seafood dinners. Paspatur Old Town: Cobbled streets lined with meyhanes, carpet shops and small restaurants — the most atmospheric area for evening dining. Fethiye Fish Market: Buy fresh fish directly from the market stalls, then take it to one of the surrounding restaurants who will cook it for a small fee — the most authentic (and economical) seafood experience in Turkey. Çalış Beach Strip: More casual, family-friendly restaurants along the beachfront promenade — excellent for lunch after a morning swim.
Fethiye Culture, History & Local Life
Ancient Lycian Heritage
Fethiye was known in antiquity as Telmessos — a principal city of the Lycian Federation. The Lycians were a remarkable civilisation with their own language and democratic traditions (the Lycian League was an inspiration for the framers of the US constitution). Their rock tombs, carved from living stone across Fethiye's cliffs and the wider region, are among the most extraordinary funerary monuments surviving from the ancient world.
The Fethiye Museum houses an excellent collection of Lycian artefacts including the unique Trilingual Stele — inscribed in Lycian, Greek and Aramaic — which was crucial in deciphering the Lycian language. The nearby ancient cities of Tlos, Pinara and Xanthos are UNESCO World Heritage sites within day-trip distance.
Modern Turkish Coastal Life
Despite being Turkey's most popular sailing destination, Fethiye retains a genuine community feel. The town has a year-round population of local fishermen, farmers and merchants who share their city with seasonal visitors. The Tuesday and Friday markets are working markets, not tourist showcases. The çay (tea) culture is omnipresent — small glass cups of strong black tea are offered everywhere as a gesture of hospitality, from carpet shops to guesthouses.
Fethiye is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the Turkish coast — a significant British expatriate community has lived here for decades, making it exceptionally English-friendly while remaining authentically Turkish. This combination makes it an unusually easy destination for first-time visitors to Turkey.
The Gulet Sailing Tradition
Fethiye is the sailing capital of Turkey's Turquoise Coast. The gulet — a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel — was born in this region and Fethiye Marina remains the hub for the Blue Cruise (Mavi Yolculuk) route that traces the ancient sailing paths from Fethiye to Marmaris. Chartering a gulet for 4–7 nights remains one of Turkey's great travel experiences — sleeping on deck under the stars, swimming in secret coves only accessible by boat, and dining on fresh fish prepared by your captain's cook.
Festivals & Local Events
Fethiye hosts the International Fethiye Culture and Art Festival each summer, filling the Old Town with concerts, traditional dance performances and craft exhibitions. The annual Fethiye Gulet Race attracts sailing vessels from across the Mediterranean. During Ramadan, evening iftars (breaking of the fast) at the town square are a genuine community event open to all visitors — a beautiful expression of Turkish culture and generosity.
Best Time to Visit Fethiye
Perfect weather (24–28°C), sea warm enough to swim, minimal crowds, lower hotel rates before peak season. Our top recommendation for value and experience.
Hottest months (30–36°C), busiest beaches and highest hotel prices. Book at least 3–4 months ahead. Compensated by guaranteed sunshine and a buzzing atmosphere.
Arguably the finest time to visit — sea temperature peaks in September, crowds thin by mid-September, hotel prices drop 20–40%. Outstanding weather continues through October.
Most resorts close but Fethiye town remains open and atmospheric. Ideal for hiking the Lycian Way, exploring ruins without crowds and experiencing authentic local life at very low cost.
